Our Community Contributions

Since 2001 Masha Schwartz Art has worked with nonprofit organizations including Hands on DCSo Others Might Eat (SOME) and others to help renovate schools and homeless shelters in the DC area with educational murals. This has been an ongoing effort to educate and inspire our future entrepreneurs and business owners.

HoDC Workathon 2011

MacFarland High School

Challenge: The school was experiencing high levels of vandalism when their bathroom walls were defaced with profanity and graffiti by young boys. Rather than reprimanding or taking legal action the school was looking to solve the problem in a creative way.

Solution: To solve the problem, I proposed that we do murals on the walls that would look graffiti-like and allow for artistic additions to the wall in the future done by students so it looks like it’s all part of the design rather than just vandalism. The mural ended up reducing profanity in the boys bathroom and inspired other creative projects in the school.

Ludow Taylor Elementary School

Concept: This mural was designed to increase students awareness of the brain power and abilities to grow, learn and share knowledge.

HoDC Workathon 2012

Transition/Homeless Shelter
Room design created and led by Masha Schwartz

Challenge: Design a room in the homeless/transition center that would engage the children to be more creative, positive and playful amidst their current situation.

Solution: The room in a transition/homeless shelter was very small and had one small window that brought light into the room. Since the room was on the third floor I proposed that we design it as a tree house for the kids. This way kids feel that it’s a safe place, similar to a small tree house in a tree. The scene was set to look like countryside from the treehouse. Clouds were painted in chalkboard paint so children could write on them and play games. Small furniture was brought it for kids to decorate the treehouse and additional lights and toys were brought in to enhance the treehouse experience.

Noyes Elementary School

Concept: The idea behind this full size wall mural was to encourage teamwork and diversity. The school also wanted to incorporate the phrase: “Together we make a difference”

Solution: There were a couple of designs created for this mural and the final design was actually selected by the students who volunteers to help paint the mural on the wall. The winning design incorporated children of different colors and background standing together, holding hands, and creating a strong front for any challenges that come their way.

Powell Elementary School

Concept: The “Knowledge Roots” concept was created by the school to create a memory lane. Capturing the names of graduating students on the tree branches and tree roots will create a timeline of students over the years and also pay tribute to all those who have obtained knowledge in the school.

Solution: There were two narrow tall spaces dedicated to this project that were located on two different floors. Two teams of volunteers were selected for this project to complete it efficiently in 4 hrs. To differentiate the trees the morning and night themes were developed for the two murals. The main folliage of the trees along with some branches were depicted in the form of a brain to symbolize knowledge. Since the school wanted to include school staff and students in deciding which words will be used on tree branches and roots so those were left bare. The school was really happy with the final result and student names are still being recorded on the trees today.

Charles Hart Middle School

Concept: Complete the look of the auditorium by painting the space below the stage to elevate school’s brand presence for performances and other school gatherings.

Solution: A mural was designed and implemented to complete the look of the auditorium with the school logo and a pattern currently present on the back walls of the room, tying in the entire flow of triangular shapes and increasing visibility of the school brand by showcasing the logo at the front.
